Every now and then, as I’m sitting on my deck, I find myself marveling at the wonderful strangeness that surrounds me. Trees sprout from the mountain slopes like alien fungus. Four-legged creatures graze on a hillside field, and feathered ones flit to a feeder. An invisible breeze wafts down the cove. It’s amazing to think I belong here, part of an unknowable wondrousness. What a privilege it is to be alive.
We live in a universe of indeterminate layers within an incomprehensible vastness both above and below. Nonetheless, in the midst of all the complexity, the universe has given rise to a living world. No one knows how that is possible, yet here we are.
Every day we are subjected to the trauma of violence, fear, hatred, and suffering. An antidote is to remember, to remind ourselves, to see the transcendent miraculousness in which we live, and move, and have our being.
Take a moment today to appreciate the wonders that sustain your existence, to marvel at the miraculous and delight in the marvelous
Then do it again tomorrow.
